A marine engineer builds, repairs and maintains ship parts, such as the propulsion systems or the ship chassis, along with the support systems for the crew. It requires an intricate understanding of engineering, specialising in ship building. It also requires more universal skills such as problem solving and team working.

A person looking for a career as a marine engineer can expect to earn a minimum salary of around £23-24k with the right qualifications and having had some kind of apprenticeship. A degree in an engineering-related subject such as marine engineering or naval architecture would be required. Experienced senior marine engineers can expect to earn more, between £28-55k. Marine engineers are expected to be flexible in their hours, including shift and weekend work.
